Dorsett City – Aldgate

With their Shepherd’s Bush hotel under construction and due to open in 2014, the rapid expansion of the Dorsett brand in London has gained further momentum with approval of their plans for The Matrix in Aldgate, City of London.

Having been involved with previous feasibility work for The Matrix site, Preconstruct were commissioned produce planning images and AVR verified views to help the new owners secure planning permission for 275 rooms, a restaurant, gym and an executive lounge whilst adding 3 floors to the historically sensitive site.

Having initially bought the site to refurbish the commercial office as a hotel, the architects and engineers devised a new-build strategy delivering better value and a better, more attractive and sustainable design.

St Botolph’s Church, sitting prominently in front of the western elevation of The Matrix provided both the most significant consideration for visual impact and the most significant element in the formation of the design. A taller, more slender building provides a complimentary backdrop to St Botolph’s and eliminates overhang into the public realm alongside the church.

Using our experience of the site from the earlier work on The Matrix, we smoothly integrated with the project team to help define and deliver a suite of AVR verified and non-verified CGIs to support the detailed planning application.

Specialist heritage consultants Tavernor Consultancy, architect McBains Cooper and Preconstruct combined to respond to the planning team’s visual impact assessment requirements with clear, logical and finely presented documentation.

Scoping, photography, survey and production were carried out on a tight schedule to meet interim pre-application requirements and submission deadline.
