GO AHEAD GIVEN FOR NEW FACILITIES
AT CITY UNIVERSITY LONDON

City University London has achieved planning consent for the redevelopment of three of their obsolescent halls, as well as enhancements to their sports facilities. The 1.5 acre site sits between Goswell Road, Bastwick Street and Peartree Street, close to their Northampton Square Campus.

The location provided numerous planning challenges and Islington’s Core Strategy placed clear limitations on the approach to the height and size of the scheme.

We produced a suite of verified views, as well as an animation, that depicted the new scheme within two square miles of surrounding context. The animation allowed the planning officers to view the scheme from an extensive number of viewpoints.

Generation Estates was selected to develop the scheme which will include: 805 student accommodation units, a 34,000 square feet sports hall and 19,665 square feet of teaching accommodation. Architects T P Bennett were careful to balance the needs and aspirations of both the client the local authority, using designs that were sympathetic to the architectural vernacular yet maintained modern expression.

Planning consent was granted in March 2012 and the facilities were completed for the start of the 2014-15 academic year.
